Pigeon Pose

Feb 22, 2024 | Pose Exploration, Videos,

Pigeon Pose, kapotasana, is a powerful back-bending posture that moves energy through the hips and pelvis while opening the heart, throat, and upper body. This squatting backend requires preparation by warming both the hips and upper body, which is why it is typically practiced near the end of class. Though the posture is promoted as a hip-opener, folks with tight hips, knee pain, or tightness in the upper body may struggle to find ease in pigeon pose.

This short demo video guides you through the pose, including how props make the posture more accessible. As I now practice with a hip replacement and repaired meniscus, I find more props necessary to be comfortable in pigeon pose. I hope this short tutorial is helpful in making pigeon pose accessible for you.
