Loving-Kindness Meditation Practice
November, for me, is the Month of Many Events. When my children were small, we hurled ourselves from Halloween to Birthdays 1, 2, and 3, followed by Thanksgiving, Hannukah, and Christmas. Sometimes, I wonder how I had the energy to make it through! During my younger life, I would have significantly benefitted from three things:
1. the ability to pause, breathe, and slow down
2. the ability to be “on to myself,” step out of my story, and change my relationship with my inner dialogue
3. the ability to offer loving-kindness to myself (strongly related to number 2 above)
I’m grateful for my teachers who taught me the above–having the tools to begin again when I get lost in thought and forget to pause and breathe makes all the difference.
My first meditation practice was metta, or loving-kindness, which has profoundly impacted my life. Metta Meditation can appear simple, yet it contains potent space for shifts within our beings. The effect of each meditation may be subtle or immense; over time, offering metta has incrementally rippled through my being to create a greater presence and ability to offer compassion to myself and others.
The essence of loving-kindness leads us to open our ears and hearts to the experience of both ourselves and others, near and far. I want to share this profound practice with you. I hope this 15-minute metta meditation deepens your relationship with yourself as you offer metta to yourself and others.
